Johan was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He earned a Bachelors of Arts degree from the School of Cinema-Television at USC in Los Angeles and began directing commercials and music videos soon after graduation. Johan’s work has been featured in SHOTS, shortlisted in Cannes and won numerous awards.
His short film PASSING HEARTS (En del av mitt hjärta), which Johan wrote and directed in 2004 was honored with several prestigious awards at film festivals over the world, including the audience award in Berlin. In 2006 Johan made his debut as a feature film writer and director with the poignant drama SUDDENLY (Underbara älskade). The film, which was both critically and commercially successful, won the prestigious Peoples Choice Award at Swedish Guldbagge Awards.
Following up on the box-office and critically acclaimed hit, Johan wrote and directed AMONG US (Änglavakt) in 2010 – an emotionally gripping story about faith, hope and love – starring Michael Nyqvist (Girl with the dragon tattoo), Izabella Scorupco (Goldeneye), and French star Tchéky Karyo (Nikita, The Missing).
His third feature I LOVE YOU – A COMEDY OF DIVORCE (Jag Älskar Dig – En skilsmässokomedi) is a bittersweet, modern take of the classical “comedy of remarriage” sub-genre. It was released in the fall of 2016.
Johan lives in Stockholm, is married and has two children and plays a decent game of tennis.
